Cancer will attack one in three people and kill one in five and the incidence is rising. Cancer therapeutics represents a huge underserved medical market characterized by large numbers of patients, non-curative therapies and high margins. Targeted therapeutics, such as antibody-based drugs are just now starting to have a major economic impact:

The actual market for cancer therapeutics is much larger when conventional therapeutics are included. According to PhRMA figures, worldwide member revenues for anti-cancer and related types of drugs exceeded $20 billion in 2000. Even this understates revenues because many foreign company’s revenues are not included and the poor efficacy of existing cancer treatments leaves many major indications and markets undeveloped. Some of Targa’s compounds may also be useful in the treatment of non-cancerous hyperproliferative disorders and infectious diseases, as well. Both areas are also major market opportunities.

From a corporate development standpoint, Targa Therapeutic Payload Technologies may make the critical difference to a product’s success. Currently, there are over 190 active U.S. cancer clinical trials involving antibodies, of which only a few use toxins and 21 use radiolabeled antibodies. According to one study done several years ago, there are currently over 250 companies developing over 600 antibodies worldwide, many for the treatment of cancer. A significant percentage of these are potential candidates for upgrading, using Targa Therapeutic Payloads.
